hmmmm, i just missed out on enough free glazing to glaze the entire south elevation of my hose, and that was to be as a trombe wall, I retrieved the trailer, emtied it into the store, and when I got there the skip had just been removed that afternoon....

I too would love to hear from anyone who is doing it

You find some fascinating stuff, Billi. I bet we really miss out if we don't read the German Renewables websites.

Is there any fundamental difference between a Trombe wall and a heat-trap room/conservatory?    If you were building from scratch is there any reason not to make the space a bit bigger and make a room out of the glazing, rather than just a gap.   You could still have a opaque roof and overhang, to avoid overheating in summer, and the vents/blowers/thermal mass to take full advantage of the solar gain.

One thing to consider with walls is build up of moulds and damp between the wall and the glazing - I know some of the systems at CAT have been blocked up because of health risks with mould spores being flushed through the building.

Many thanks Welshboy. I will follow with interest.
and to Billi for the links. I too was after a dual trombe wall
and say narrow growing area to extend the growing season.
The summer has been sausage here too (even worse than '07)
but it really is the winter warmth I was after.

Hi

I was just thinking ..... what would be the cheapest transparent material to do a trombe wall ?

I like glass a lot but hard to work with ..... plastic or so can get blind in the weather and is it cheaper ?

I am thinking of ideas to  cover old cottages (here in ireland) with glass and leave the nice old natural stone work to shine through  so as a outside insulation and a modern approach to achieve that (also its dryer then)

In former times all this good stonework was covered with lime-motar  and people like to keep the natural stone now .... but moisture problems and where to put the insulation?

There are good/ nice fixings available for mounting vertical glas panels ... but how much is a sqmeter of good glas  Huh

Billi

Perhaps i should get these glashouses for free  Grin Tongue

8 of them for free ...just the work and transport horror

Hey Welshboy  chears

We are redesigning our new housebuilt ideas .... and in all good designs Madness has to be first  Grin and then ratio.. money ...etc

So we have a lot of stone here i can built with (natural stone from the land, but have to find out about the radon problem first  ) ,  so i thought i could build a big part of the house just with the stones we have on site , without using any building blocks at all ( like the old buildings are ) using lime or clay based renders inside and lime based mortars for building ....and then face the whole bulding with glas to keep the walls dry and warm  with a gap  between the wall and the glass ( i guess its similar price to concrete block and insulation ( but a cooler idea  Grin)

Only problem is how to keep the glass or the plastic clean ( wont kill spiders , cause luv them ..)  My architect thinks .... iam a bid mental ... Tongue  thats fine...

The idea is to keep the nice natural stonework nice and defined ,covered by glass (good hanging systems available)

I saw a few renovations of old buildings in Europe that just used Glass as the Fassade instead of plastering the old stone .... like a window into the past .... liked that a lot

Just a thought and will  perhaps invent a micro robot-powerwasher for vertical walls (actually for swimmingpools they exist  Roll Eyes
