I've finally found the answer to my original question on why VW specify biodiesel should NOT be used on their particulate-filter engines. Rightly or wrongly, I think this presentation on oil grades and modern engines explains why.

I assume that the easy way around this is more frequent oil changes (VW have a 24 000 mile service on their Golf Diesel) - but engine oil technology isn't my strongpoint!

At the vegetableoildiesel forum the recommendation is to halve the normal oil change mileage.

As most run older vehicles this brings it down, for many, to 3-4000 miles.

The amount saved on fuel easily pays for this.
