Hi Martin and any other Linux/Ubuntu users,

Sorry this post has nothing to do with renewables, but I know some of the forum members are into Linux based operating systems etc..........

For one reason or another I am on my third laptop in two years and this latest one actually belongs to the Mrs.  I must admit to being a bit of a Luddite when it comes to computers, especially when it comes to trying to fix the poxy things  wackoold

For the last couple of laptops (both of which are old Toshiba Tecra T9100's), I have ditched MS Windows in favour of Ubuntu 8.04 which dose everything I/we need from a computer and more.  However after loading it onto the latest Tecra, there appears to be no sound, even though it worked fine before (with Windows) and it worked ok with my other identical Tecra  Huh

I have tried reinstalling/upgrading and following the various Ubuntu help files etc, but I can't get to the bottom of it and I just seem to reach a dead end all the time.  I have even tried posting the following details on a number of Ubuntu/Linux forums, but still didn't get much help.  So I gave up and have been limping by without sound for some months now, but there are times when it could be really handy and I was wondering if any of you guys & girls knew what the problem may be and how to fix it, as I am sure (hope) it must be something straight forwards, but I can't seem to see the wood for the trees....  help

Anyway here's a copy of what I posted on the Ubuntu/Linux forums....sorry for the long post, but any help will be much appreciated.....coz it's driving me crazy   banghead

I've just loaded Ubuntu 8.04 onto a Toshiba Tecra T9100 and have no sound. My volume icon has a red warning sign over it, clicking the icon gives me an error window that says "No volume control Gstreamer plugins and/or devices found(I also have another identical laptop on which the sound works ok ....but has other problems).

So I started following the instructions on the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide thread....

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

Step 1....

rachel@rachel-laptop:~$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:205: no soundcards found...

Step 2....

rachel@rachel-laptop:~$ lspci

Am I right in saying that no sound card is listed and should there be something like this be listed....

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

I checked to see if it was disabled in the systems BIOS, but found no mention of a sound card?...So what do I do next, can I reinstall it from somewhere ?

Sorry this is all very new to me and as I've said, I haven't got much of clue when it comes to computers....I'm more your old school pencil and paper kind of guy and water and wood is more my thing, so go gentle  Tongue

Cheer's

Lightfoot.

Yes, I've had a good look in there....not so much as a system beep !

Everything is set to Autodetect apart from Audio conferencing sound capture, which is set to ASLA

When I click on the Music and Movies test button,  I get the following message....

"audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument"

....poxy thing, where's my abacus  Roll Eyes

In step 2 did you type     lspci -v    presumably the -v switch does something, maybe just lists sound cards?

hope you don't mind my going through the "obvious" - I've got a little speaker logo top right on my apps bar, if I click it once, I get a  volume control, double click, and you get a "multiple" volume control - I've found that from time to time you can have the main "volume" set to "max", and one of the "minor" volume controls has been set to low or off............ Smiley
Of similar ilk, I presume you've tried the "fn" and volume on/off keys?

Please feel free to point out any obvious cock-ups I may be making, but as mentioned the speaker icon has a red warning sign over it and when I click on it I get the following error message....

"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plug-ins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.
You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu."

Or

"No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found"

I have also just tried the "fn" and volume on/off keys and nothing appears to have changed  Huh

I can't see a sound card listed there. What do you get listed on the working Tosh? Did you ever have it working under windows? Sorry yes you said it did!!
Are both laptops running the exact same version of UBUNTU?

Yes at the point of death of the first (identical) laptop, they were both running the same version of Ubuntu, which has now been upgraded on the remaining laptop.

It is a regular problem with Linux that some things don't work but that applies to XP and Vista  just as much if not more.   The network card on the motherboard of my Linux Server doesn't work so it just means adding another one.  Sound cards are more difficult but you could use an external USB card.  If you do a search on "external USB sound card Linux"  you should find something that doesnt cost the earth.    You might also find an updated driver for the sound card.

Some things to try
Open System -> Administration -> Update Manager
I think this will pull in the latest build.
Also you could try disabling the autodetect bit you mentsioned earlier, and changing to ASLA if it'll let you

lsmod is your friend.
You'll probably need to be running as root to use it but it will show you loaded modules on the system, and also whats using them.
