Caldo,

Thanks for the link to the fascinating video. To think this was 30 years ago, and even then Jean Pain was talking about sustainable energy and agriculture.

Unfortunately Britain and Europe have had 30 years of cheap energy from the North Sea, and this has effectively suppressed any research into viable alternatives.  Britain is really dragging its heels in this area.

His investment of 500 litres of fuel, plus about 1 weeks wages for his team, yields a bio-energy pile that can produce more than 10,000 litres of fuel equivalent.  That sounds like an EROEI of better than 20:1, which is a superior ratio to most of the current crude oil production.

His 40 tonne / 80 cubic metre stack is producing about 12kW peak of heat (for 18 months) - replacing 4000 litres of heating oil (40,000 kWh)  though I suspect the pile runs on average at about 3 - 6kW heat output otherwise the figures don't add  up.

Sufficient methane to replace 5000 litres of road fuel  (about 50,000 kWh) should also make the pound signs light up in most peoples eyes.

The question is whether this technique is down-scaleable, could you for example make one about 1/20th of the size and more suited to domestic (home) production?

Could you possibly make a 2 metre cube from 16 old pallets, lined with a tarpaulin or butyl rubber liner and make a small pile?  This might be sufficient to offset 200 litres of heating oil (or gas) and provide daily hot water plus sufficient methane for cooking, and possibly running a small genny.
