Started,

Brought myself a bit of a bargain off fleabay, someone was selling a half made tracker (old motorised 2m satelite dish without the dish, lots of aluminium box channel, a brand new 18 inch actuator and an electronic controller in non built kit form).

The plan is a soladin 600 with PV panels up at around 600w worth.

Any recommendations/news of bargains on the panel front?

If you are expecting to control about 5 square metres of panels in a gale you will need quite a substantial arrangement.  Good luck.

Hi RAB,

Thankfully where I intend to postion the array is quite sheltered but it still is an issue. I'm considering a very substantial post into the ground.

a very substantial post into the ground.

It is not the post that I was thinking of. That is easy - a huge lump of RSJ in a large concrete base will suffice.  No problem.

To control 5 m2 you will need a very substantial frame and a hefty way to control it.

I agree that a surface area of 5m2 is required and am looking at a design that has two rows of two panels with a gap of say 200mm between the rows to let the wind through.

Noting the season and hope that panel prices may reduce (not sure on that now that the £ has taken a tumble) I'm intending to wait until the spring before buying.

Next phase complete. Soladin 600 purchased. Haven't decided on the panels yet so haven't finalised ontracker design yet.

Hi all been working abroad for a few months.

Just before I went I did manage to get something sorted as regards the PV installation. Brought three 230W panels and mounted them on a a 36 degree wooden frame. Connected up to first a 100A DP isolator and then Soladin inverter and an a.c isolation switch on the output and (just as a temporary hook up) plugged into a socket. I know it breaks 17th edition rules but didn't have the time before I went away to run cables back to the consumer board.

Just plugged it in and it worked and according to the wife hasn't caused any problems. Using a plug in monitor got a peak of 505w yesterday.

The plan is to mount the PV panel assembly about 7 foot off the ground so it reintroduces privacy after the neighbour cut down a tree. It will also single track.
The wife wants a summer house underneath.

A thought about your tracker.
If the wind gets up above a certain speed you could park the panels flat to reduce the sail area.

The panels are secured to four like roof trusses. So its an apex roof which means I can go to 4 metres height without planning permission. The other side of the 'roof' will be external plywood 6mm to keep the weight down. The external envelope will also minimise the sail effect.

I once got a letter from the council regarding an unauthorised erection  faint
This was  my Rutland windturbine.
Anything over 3m high requires planning consent.
I left it at 3m - it didn't do anything but I left it to annoy the mean spirited neighbours who  would rather ring the council than knock on my door and ask me what it was or could I lower it??

Ah, no. I had the same issue with my wind turbine. If it has an apex roof, it's allowed 4m (or is it 4.5m?). I convinced my planning officer that my 2kW wind turbine has an apexed roof!
