Have a look at the system developed by Dr. A. Karve of the ARTI Institute

If you start with green waste rather than material that is already digested, then the gas output will be much higher - by a factor of about 20. (And a lot less smelly!).
You will need some cow dung to get it started - as the dung contains the necessary methane producing microbes.
Another approach is that of Jean Pain, who used composting techniques to produce methane and hot water. His work is illustrated in a couple of YouTube videos.
