List,

I awoke today to  find I had no internet or email.  Something went wrong in the night with the Orange service provision.

I eventually managed to get an internet connection via a neighbours wireless router, and found the following on Orange's website

Quote
DNS

Domain name service is dynamic.

If connecting to a router, and need DNS settings for home networking, use the IP address or your router, i.e.

    * 192.168.1.1

If Orange domain name server (DNS) addresses are required, you should use:

195.92.195.94 and 195.92.195.95

Or, if you experience problems with the above, use:

193.36.79.101 and 193.36.79.100

I have just changed the DNS addresses to the latter two given, rebooted the router and all is well.

Nearly a day lost to internet problems - anyone else use Orange or experienced similar sudden outages.

Welcome back Ken

ive been having probs for 2 weeks with my mobile braodband via 3

They wrote to say due to underestimating the popularity of the service, they are having to upgrade and sorry for the disruption.
It mean it can take up to 6 mins to upload a page at the moment, which is infuriating.  banghead

Billy, ........I dunno where a mast is and from what they said, thats not the problem, there just isnt enough capacity in the system.  chocolateteapot

I only opted for mobile cos when i moved here, the previous tennent hadnt paid BT and they cut the line off.
Cheeky people wanted £125 to reconnect. I argued it wasnt cos of me they had to disconnect so why should i pay for it.

Bless em.  fume

What a handy gadget 3 mobile is.  I bought one, tested it out and haven't seen it since. It was just what my eldest daughter's laptop needed.  Now I need to get another.   The new house doesn't have  broadband yet but the equipment is being installed.   One advantage of the mobile card is that I will be able to login to the office computer when I am away.

Phoned up Virgin at the weekend to see if someone could tell me why I only 3Mbits/s on a 10meg line. Ended up speaking to an unintelligible Indian with a 10 second delay. I ended up hanging up. I then phoned the sales line, knowing that they wouldn't risk loosing a sale because you can't understand what the operator is saying. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I ended up nearly £15 better off with evening and weekend calls thrown in!  Grin

Also I spoke to a proper techie who, whilst not solving my problem, clicked a lightbulb on in my thick head. I received a couple of Homeplug (ethernet over the mains) units today and tonight my access speed is up to 8.3 meg.  Cool

By the way, if your interested in those units Amazon have them on special offer at the moment. Great price. £50 for 2. Search for Zyxel PLA401.

So often lately ive been wondering what my Grandpa would make of the interweb and mobile technology.

I think with every new year and new development we are so used to it now we take it for granted.

Its only 25 years next month since i had my first landline and had to wait months for it to be installed with a 4 digit code and 4 digit number.
Anything you wanted to know couldnt be found in the reference library, not like Go ogle today.

Think of any word, type in and be offered at least 100s of thousands of pages in seconds.

Chat to anyone in the world from anywhere, at a stroke, and watch them in real time.

Ive got a mobile thats got more brains than Apollo 11. it holds my hifi collection, phone book, calendar, photo album, typewriter, diary, calculator, and stuff i dont even know about or know how to use or even why i need it.

Its so small i can lose it in a pocket, its so cheap i dont count what it costs and its so everyday common i  could take it for granted.

Add to that my macbook and poor old Grandpa really wouldnt be able to comprehend the concepts of whats possible.

Ken,

Try using opendns servers i find them faster and more reliable than isp dns servers

I once called my bank and was put through to the indian call centre.

She was rabbiting away so I asked her to slow down, speak clearly and start again.

She then informed me very clearly that if i was going to be racist, i would be reported.

I explained that i wasnt racist but couldnt understand her accent, just like i cant understand anyone who doesnt pause for breath and has a strong foreign accent.

What can you say?  I sacked the bank.
Funny how when your buying you get the UK sales call centre but after that you get the foreign one who put you on hold for ages and then cut you off.  fume
