What do you get if you just connect at 19200, 8N1? With minicom, kermit, hyperterm, etc?

Nothing? A prompt? Stream of numbers? Does hitting return do anything? It is possible that the interface only responds to explicit inputs, in which case you need to ask the supliers what te protocol is. That java software doesn't include any source, but you can sort-of work out what's going on by disassembling it. I didn't learn as much as I expected, partly because I don't know any java at all, but there are definately clues in there. (A documented protocol being a much more generaly useful thing than a java-program for Windows)

reading Billi's links, this is the key post in the German thread...

Hallo mit das program solarcontrol geht das auch.
Hier kanst du sehen wast du brauchst (hollandisch)
http://www.zonstraal.be/wiki/Solarcontrol

Program ist hier zu downloaden http://www.masterwork.be/documenten/SolarControl1_1.zip

Mit die PV monitor sind nur einige grafieken zu machen, etwas teuer fur 300€ denke ich.

The instructions for the software are on the first link and the software is on the second link.... its a java jar, so you'll need Java installed on a windows machine (sun Java version 5.0 or higher is mentioned in the dutch instructions) and in the dutch instructions win32com.dll was mentioned. Guess thats for older 16 bit machines running win98.
Comms settings for the software, baudrate of 19200, Databit 8, Parity None, Stop Bit 1.

Seems like the install is written in English mostly.... have fun.

Oh of course you'll need a serial cable !

Hi
Elanor regarding wind turbines.... MrsB (mission control) may be the main problem. Martin avert your eyes now! MrsB wants a VAWT, and no HAWT design has passed her muster - she needs persuading! My neighbours such as they are (about 4 in view - though this may increase with height)  seem positive but I will keep them in the consultation process.

Billi thanks this looks like the ticket but as SleepyB says I should try some standard checks- not enough hours in the day at present. But will try to download  the usual 5 versions of the Java package - never seem to get the right combo.

Will have a go over the next few days!

Sean, before we moved here I was wandering around an industrial estate in Aylesbury and chanced upon a couple of chaps manhandling shower cubicles into a lorry. Upon closer inspection I realised that they were actually the blades of a Ropatec VAWT which were destined for a Tesco carpark somewhere. I suspect that Mrs B has her eye on something a little more refined than a shower cubicle, maybe a Quiet Revolution? Looks good, although to me they look better on the ground but a bit odd several metres in the air. As Martin says the ones that seem to be currently available "don't get up and boogie" at a sensible speed and then stop generating at a modest 16 m/s. If you have the money, no objectionable neighbours and the FITs sums stack up the Gaia seems a much better proposition. However, being a mad off grid type like Billi I would have to squirrel a few batteries away for when the grid fails  Roll Eyes

luckly the neighbours sold him the land, However even im supprised at the scale of your ambition! i think you will be needing a crane and thicker cable this time  Roll Eyes

PS.  I think three blades look better.
PPS. Will bring my serial laptop just to eliminate that side of the problem.

Hi Wookey, SleepyB, Elanor and Stu

Elanor you are right MrsB does quite like the Quiet Revolution design there is a very prominent one in central Newcastle (photo attached). I know the people involved in monitoring this one (indeed David was a volunteer at the StB PV weekend) and will keep a close eye on the results - but urban environments tend not to be good. The group also has a small HAWT which is almost totally useless. I have to admit the VAWT looks well in its location - might look a bit odd in the middle of a field in Northumberland though. It is also very expensive - about a factor of two more than a Proven of the same rated power.

Did no get a chance last night but hopefully will have time to have another go at getting the data out of the Platinum inverter tonight. Stu thanks for your offer - having a serial port will reduce one level of complexity. Currently using the USB/Serial adaptor suggested by Wookey...

Why not borrow the HAWT if it's not do any good there and stick it up in your field whilst you consider more permanent options?

Once it's there .........................................

Richard
I have been offered almost exactly that - well a small 24V HAWT  (Rutland 913) to borrow over the winter......

Well
read through the German, Dutch and French links sent by Billi. Downloaded the software - compatable (for a change with my current installed version of Java) had problems getting the right com port. Then Bingo! loads of Data! Billi the number of pints of Guinness I owe you when I next get to Kerry grows ever higher! Wookey the USB/Serial dongle works a treat. Here are two plots of the best and worst days so far. With a bit more work I could predict what I would get with a dawn to dusk clear day. There is loads of other data- hours of fun. It is clear that even the best day is not great. Will have a go at curve integration to predicet the max I am likely to get.

Had a bit more time to play with the data. Here is a plot showing a bit more detail. Good day in the NE today so maybe the best day yet for the PV array..
