Sad news

After the elation I had earlier this afternoon, Ive been saddened to hear this evening that about the same time i was being quietly chuffed, a former work coleague commited suicide.

The company were told 2 months ago that redundancies were due to be anounced near Christmas and were in fact finalised last week.

Well over half the 600+ workforce at Sealine boats are set to lose their jobs at the end of january 09.


Petes death will be a shock to many people and a reminder of how fragile life can be.

These are hard times at the moment, i dont envy anyone who is looking for work at the moment.

Pete loved his job and it gave him a lot more than just a pay cheque, so it just goes to show how devastating job loss can be for some.

im quite thankful for working for myself.

we have slowed significantly recently, im guessing partly seasonal partly this crunch nonsense, but atleast i cant be made redundant, the worst that can happen is that i dont pay myself (like this month thanks to chasing customers who pay so slowly)

IVery sad Amy. An ex-girlfriend of mine committed suicide and it is impossible to describe the devestating effects it had. I think of her every day and despair at the loss and sadness it propagates.

Im surprised how many people are affected by this,  perhaps its more common than it appears.

ive also been affected by this so know exactly what its like.

The death of a loved one is hard to bear under usual circumstances but there are so many "what ifs" when its a suicide or tragedy.

On my sisters wedding day, an ex boyfriend of hers and close friend of mine shot himself. He had recently left the Army and found it hard to settle into pongo life.

Having been close to it myself 4 years ago, i cant say i understand as all circumstances are unique but it seems the logical and only solution to take away the pain and failure. In that moment, the selfishness and waste of life arnt given a moments thought.

Hi A very good friend commited suicide some time ago he had it all to live for but deicided to pull the plug I suspect that there will be a lot more of this before the current problems are over more so at this time of year I dont know what the answer is but if you think that a friend is not right have a word or two as most people tend to be very blinkered and can only see the problems and not the joys in life

Sorry to hear that Amy, don't beat yourself up about it as sometimes there is nothing you could have done to help the loved one. My Dad would still be alive if he had not drunk so much in his later years - unfortunately I had no idea how serious the situation was until my Daughter explained the Coroner's Medical Report.

Make sure you talk it over with other colleagues, we get through bereavement much easier as a family/group supporting each other.

I think redundancy opens new doors and is a good test of character - we can help our friends and colleagues by asking what they will do if they lose their job. We should always have a contingency plan for everything in life.

last year one of my wife's best friends committed suicide. Consultant anaesthetist, apparently happy at work and home. Husband thought she was fine. Anaesthetists have a 100% success rate with suicide once they decide to do it there is normally no warning. Needless to say we were stunned and Husband was in complete shock.
