I bought a Toshiba Satellite  A300 recently.  It was the cheapest laptop I could find at the time with XP installed from a particular supplier.   Very handy, it works anywhere in the  house using it's wireless network card and connected to the internet immediately without any setting up.

there is a couple of 7" netbooks going on fleabay for around £70. but they run winCE......

I was thinking of getting one of these as i expect it is really low power (less than 20 watts).... anyone think I can get templog to run on winCE?, I'm looking at laptops, but I expect them to be more than 20watts usage... Mine uses 20 watts when the screen is off.

My current need is 2 temperture sensors, but I can eventually see a need for 'loads', plus pulse reading for water meeters, etc. Thats why I thin of using eee pc, laptop, etbook thingy, as I havent really got time at the moment for a electroinic build it thinkgy.....

Update....
I have just found out that that my D-Link DNS-323 NAS can run Linux, so I am going to try that root as opposed to purchase and run another windows device that will be on 24/7. I have directed my questions on the Linux set up to this thread instead  http://www.navitron.org.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3771.30.html as a few people are using Linksys NSLU2s for the 1-wire system under Linux, and should hopefull be able to help me get it going on the D-Link.

Thanks to both Sean and Kristen for the pointers in what to buy. Just bought thew usb adaptor and 2 x sensors off homechips to get me started (plus I can always try them out on my existing laptop......

I'd suggest owfs is another option to go on linux, perhaps rather than Java...
