One thing you need to bear in mind is that solar thermal is very well developed and reaches high efficiency. PV is still developing and even though there hasn't been much movement in efficiency or prices for a few years  there are signs that it is changing.  I would go for the solar water heating first.   I only have electricity for summer water heating, apart from solar,  so it is a straightforward comparison, however using mains gas for water heating might make the comparison less one sided.

Hi Dhaslam
   Good point.I will be fitting the new 250l solar cyl this weekend,then over the next few weeks,the solar hw system fitted
  Iam looking forward to it,allthough my wife wont like fitting the panels off a ladder,,Iam joking of course
 The PV install may need a rethink,or i go for it ,allthough i would enjoy the install,i am wondering if it would be far easier paying a recognised installer,making the grant,roc certs,path smoother
