Hello,

I've finally managed to wire our computer network equipment so that it all turns off with one switch. This includes cable modem, wifi router, network hub, printer, and NAS disk. I've also connected two DECT phone chargers to this power. The whole lot uses 40w, so £40 per year if left on. We now switch it off for 10 hours per day saving around £16.

Sometimes I access the NAS disk remotely over the internet. For this, I need most of the above switched on. If I'm on holiday, I'm going to have difficulty. Seems like what I need is a telephone controller so that I can phone up the answerphone, press a few touch-tone buttons, and get the whole lot switched on. Auto switchoff after 2 hours would be nice, too.

It would be really great if this clever switch was also somehow network or USB triggered so that it switched off when all our (3) computers had been hibernated.

Options are:

(1) Landline telephone control
(2) SMS control

I've found various expensive switches at around £100-£500, but this isn't going to be worth it. Really, max budget for this is around £30. I've got some old X10 stuff that I could use, if necessary, and an old laptop USB intellipanel that could be hacked. Obviously, the clever switch must draw significantly less than 10w standby, so this rules out computer based solutions!

Any pointers to anything that might help?

Thanks!

Solid state relay, about 12 quid from Farnell.

Probably come in over 100 quid, but then it would be uber flexible  Smiley

How about this: http://www.technotrend.co.uk/pages/ss_products/phoneswitch.htm.

Maplin used to stock them, but no longer do.

The are a few on ebay including a used one for £30. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Technotrend-TPS-2000-Phoneswitch-Mains-operated-switch_W0QQitemZ330328931672QQcmdZViewItem

rs sell a gsm autodialler, so sent it a text and it operates a 230 volt rated relay

I use them for remote telemetry for plant failures etc prior to proper telemetry coming on line
