My dongle is plugged into an external, powered, hub - which in turn is plugged into a single USB port on the PC.  Just out of curiosity does the above apply, or is plugging into any of the ports [on the hub] seen as "the same" from the PC's perspective?

"If you want you can post me up all your nice molded pluggable sensors to test and I'll swap them for my perfectly working solder and sellotape cables"

No Deal!

Shame on the sensor swap... bike

for a machine with just one USB port, it would most likely just have one (onboard) hub. SO the drivers on different ports issue shouldn't matter.
However if it just has one port how old is it? I have a laptop circa 1998 with just one USB port. And what version of windows are you running on the machine?  IIRC then the original Windows 98 had some additional stuff in the service pack on the install CD for USB support. Whilst in later versions of Windows 98 USB support was bundled as part of the OS install. From that point on all versions of windows had fairly good USB support with the exception of Millenium which was just awful all round. But that is just a digression and a bit of a red herring.

I presume you've tried the dongle direct into the port bypassing the external powered hub? DH maybe right in that it is a power issue.
The fault may lie with your RJxx to RJxx adaptor but I doubt it, unless it has suffered pin damage. My money is still on a corrupt driver.

Do try the dongle in another machine....

"However if it just has one port how old is it?"

Sorry, my description wasn't clear on this point.

My PC has several USB ports (I forget, but either 2 or 4) but they are hard to get to, so I have a separate, powered, external 8-port USB hub on my desk - I leave everything connected to that, such as the Camera cable.  The hub, of course, only connects to one of the PC's USB ports - so that was my curiosity, whether this arrangement means that the PC is more immune to USB devices being sapped between the various hub's 8 ports.

"And what version of windows are you running on the machine?"

Windows 2000 server

"I presume you've tried the dongle direct into the port bypassing the external powered hub?"

Actually, no I haven't. I'd kinda thought that the power on the 1-Wire circuit (which comes from the USB dongle) was going to be insufficient if connected to the USB port on the PC's motherboard, but on reflection with only a single sensor its far more likely that it will be just fine.  I'll try that, ta.

Despite your doubt about getting to the post in time, and the posties ability to perform, its here! Horray! and thanks very much.

Plug it in, OneWireViewer can now see one temperature sensor.  Q.E.D. I think.

However, the temperature sensor keeps dropping out.  Looks like each time the 1-wire is polled it loses sight of the sensor, and then it appears again, so using OneWireViewer to view the temperature graph doesn't work because it never gets to the point of 2 consecutive readings.

I haven't tried anything yet, so a reboot may cure that. Just wanted to say thanks, and file an initial report.
