I have just received this from GoodEnergy. Should I Participate?
StB
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

As you may or may not be aware, as part of our work on our Renewable Heat Incentive – HotROCs – Good Energy plans to embark upon some Solar Thermal R&D with the aim of creating a new set of data in a previously under-researched sector of the Renewables market.

The aim of this R&D is to collect data from a number of our Solar Thermal generators, across the country, with hope of contributing information to the government’s proposed Renewable Heat Incentive in 2011. We also plan to use this information to improve the accuracy of our own ‘deeming’ methodology – the methodology we use to calculate how much we believe your generator is producing every year.

Good Energy is currently looking for participants of this R&D scheme. This would involve us metering the heat generation at a number of sites, and we would like to hear from people who would be willing to consider participation.

If you are interested, simply respond to this email with “yes”!

We’ll be back in contact in the following weeks to discuss the proposals in greater detail.

I look forward to your response,

Best regards,

Will

Give them a go, but do ask some searching questions about who has access to the data and how much you are allowed to check.
There is a real battle over this sort of stuff and it's important to get the issue raised early. It would be far to easy to find yourself locked out of information derived from your own system based around 'need to know' or 'security'.
There are a companies keen to use your power meter as proof of purchase for all kinds of systems so what might be a nicely worded request to 'help gather data' could well be saving them a lot of money down the line in 'card holder present' checks from your IP address.
At the moment who 'owns' your meter readings is up for grabs and there are many companies who feel it's all theirs.

Sean,

Did Good Energy contact you via the forum (or having looked you up on the forum) or through unrelated communications? I'm interested, because I've discussed the Hotrocs issue at length with Will from GE.

Wyleu
thanks for the advice I will ask questions and keep you informed.

Ivan, I am registered for HotROCs and as far as I know the approach was unrelated to the forum - though the reason I am with GoodEnergy at all is largely because of the good words said about them on the forum and general disgust with NPower

Ivan - I received the same email from Good Energy as I'm registered for their HotRocs currently so I think it was a direct mailing to existing customers.  I also had a chat with Will when planning my MSc thesis as I was considering developing a heat meter for solar thermal and he said they might be interested. Never heard any more so guess they found an existing commercial supplier.

Ben

Funny you should mention that because I was also in touch with Good Energy about helping them data collect and analyse, with the aim of using the data in my MSc thesis as well! I'm doing the CAT one.

I've tried to get real data but have failed - my plan had been to help GE and use their data, which they were up for. But haven't heard back, so perhaps they got a better offer.

I'm using TSol instead.

Cheers
