2010 - How can we help.

Now we often bleat about how we have been 'wronged' in some way, missed an opportunity, or just been too idle to react to something. Sometimes it is perceived - sometimes genuine. Whatever. Karma.

Now for 2010 we have the opportunitity to directly help those in our local areas who seriously need it.

I don't mean collections, stalls in some church thingy, or charity muggings in some quiet well to do Suffolk town.
There are members of our society who could do with a helping hand and somtimes 'helping hands' and skills from this forum to get things done.

I'd like to propose a help line on this forum for members who could do with a hand or two.

as a suggested example:

HELP NEEDED!
1. Lancashire, Fleetwood, Movement of 2x  elderly families plus all the odds n sods form A to B (Blackpool area)
Needs: A 4 ton size truck/ 2 able bods to help - no dosh available but plenty of food.
Date 20-23 /01/ 2010

I do not wish to hijack the forum in any way, broadcast religious paraphenalia, impose strange Gothic events etc.
Merely to help out where our society seems to have lost its way a bit.

If I'm out of line or being a tad forthright let me know - but hey...ever tried putting up a big tower/turbine in a breeze for the first time on yer tod?

fantastic idea, there has already been some of this stuff with the free transport threads, and some of the PV party stuff sean did.

I suggest everybody gets out and checks on the elderly in their street during the cold weather to make sure they are ok. A bit of ice on the path is a big thing for the doddery. Throw a bit of grit down for them and see if they need any more milk/sherry from the shops.

BTW what exactly do you need all the way up there?

Cheers for the feedback SB. I just get the vibes that most of us ( as a forum group) view things (life) slightly differently than your average suit. Just trying to glue some of these vibes together. All the best for the New Year.

Sounds eminently sensible to me - I'm all for "barter" and sticking churchillian fingers in the air at assorted suits/taxmen/eejits, and just "doing it" - my suggestion is "just do it" - start a thread, and away we go............

I think you've also pointed to a very sad fact of modern life, we're somehow ashamed or shy of showing our "better feelings" lest they be seen as weakness or an attack of "drippy 'ippydom" - many moons ago I knew a charming bloke, who was known as "Major B.....", who used to drink with his buddies at the pub we ran - he was utterly charming and had "old fashioned" manners - every time a lady came into the bar he'd shoot to his feet, and offer her a seat and a drink, and my daughter was spoiled rotten by him - should his wife, daughter and dog turn up, he was almost embarassingly "soppy" with them.......... turned out he was a retired Brigadier, and a decorated hero of the St Nazaire raid (mentioned in the eminently readable book about it) - having got to know him, he was about as far as you can get from being "wet"- it showed me that the very best and strongest people can be compassionate and caring too..............
