48 x 18 twin coil cylinder heated by 17 square metre 26 year old matt black painted aluminium roll bond flat plate collectors plus 20 tube vacuum panel.

21st Jan good clear sun but windy (11.30 on)

Start of day temperature 26C

End of day temperature 42C

Estimated water drawn off in between these times in litres = 10

I guess the solar contributed - perhaps 20 degrees C?

My sister's 30tube collector heated her tank up to around 40C a couple of days ago. Mine, unfortunately, suffers from long piperun losses, so the best I managed was 32C.

48 x 18 twin coil cylinder heated by 17 square metre 26 year old matt black painted aluminium roll bond flat plate collectors plus 20 tube vacuum panel. Flow and return is 15mm copper from cylinder for 1 metre, then divides into 10mm microbore pipe. One to a 9 square metre panel bank, one to a 8 square metre panel bank plus 20 tubes. Total flow and return pipe work is approximately 54 metres. Most of the flow and return share a 22mm armaflex insulation between them. I only experimented on my own system like this. I am not saying that this is good practice.

23rd  Jan mostly good clear sun but cold and windy (11.30 on) Perhaps I will get around to fitting a thermometer nearer the bottom one day.

(Thermometer situated at top of cylinder)

Start of day temperature 30C

End of day temperature 43C

Estimated water drawn off in between these times in litres = 0

I have 20 70m tubes and my 140 ltr tank went from 14 deg to 29 deg.  Pump ran for about 3-4 hours.  Usage would have been negligeble.
Thought it might have done more ? pipe runs are about 20m in total, 90% has been insulated....Must get round to finishing that off !

O MidKnight....You nag like my wife !

I ran out of Armaflex High temp stuff....got some more now so can finish it tonight....only a bit that didn;t get done and it's on the return part.

Just an aside, I phoned the wife to see what was going on today temp wise and the panel was upto 103 deg....pump wasn't pumping although it was running.....I'm not sure if the pump speed 1 is enough to open the one way valve (BS 4 controller set ot 100% pump speed) or if I still have some air in the system (pretty sure there is a fair amount yet to be bled off).
Wife moved pump onto speed 2 and it all cleared...I'll bleed it again tonight, but I might leave it on speed 2 until I am around to monitor it...

You have a problem with flow - probably air in the header. The non-return valve will easily open at 100% pumping speed on pump position1.

I can fully understand if your wife nags you.  Smiley How many times a day have you been known to phone your good lady to enquire about the solar system?

Stop worrying, judges today are obliged to be fair. She'd get the house, you'd get the solar panels Smiley
