errr,, i have been doing this for years,  when one looks outside on frosty morn and sees ones car winscreen frozen over,one procures une empty 2lt plastic bottle and fills it with good hot water,one places this nice hot water bottle on the dash tight to the inside of the windscreen and one goes back inside and has ones bacon and eggs and sausages,with toast.,then when one reappeares back outside,expecting to see a frozen windscreen,one is amazed to see clear vision on the drivers side just above the dash around this hot bottle. i know, i know,, i feel like the "great mcgonagle" the scottish poet whose inspirations came to him in a vision.,however,,i have to warn newcomers to the idea,one can get a sore set of goolies when going around S bends where the said bottle flys across the dash, bounces back of the passinger door and lands in ones private area.i speak from experience.also one can get hot flushes peering close to the screen through the gap above the bottle.... on third thoughs,maybe its not such a good idea after a,,, gawwwwd i think they spiked my bovril tonight.  biff. |

Hahaha... nice trick with the plastic bottle. Nice way to re-use those plastic bottles lying around the house that are thick enough to contain boiling hot water.  |

I pour the warm water straight on the frost, tada gone. still got the inside condensation to deal with usually involves a few miles of breating out through the window.

the inside condensation to deal with The trick there is to not have any internal condensation  We open the windows for the last half-mile when coming home to let all the warm moist air out of the car. |

haha, I've had to clear snow off the dashboard or usually empty the rain off the seat covers, air tightness is too modern |

Hot water .... Frozen Windscreens!  Surely a good chance of a broken screen!  Cold water however works just as well poured on! |

I've been using warm water to defrost the screen ever since I could drive - which is erm......quite a while! Never cracked one yet, though I have cringed from time to time when I see a neighbour coming out with a steaming kettle! If you use a decent amount of water, and pour it slowly from the top of the screen - it generally removes the condensation inside the window too - two birds in one! Andy |

Interesting...
Without going in to the minutiae of entropy and enthalpy... Why waste valuable heat energy pouring boiling / hot water onto a windscreen?
Instead, pour cold recycled water (water butt etc) or cold tap water over the windscreen, wait a few moments, ice gone, drive off.
If you're driveway faces south, then get into the habit of reversing your vehicle in at night and when the sun rises in the east, it should start melting the ice...

I have always done this with hot kettle water. You have to wipe off immediately otherwise wind chill factor freezes the water left !!! Ken

I put a bank card to realy proper use and scrape off the ice while the engine is warming the oil at tickover to reduce damage to my big hens
