Quote
Footballer Gary Neville has applied to build a flower-shaped eco-friendly house in Greater Manchester.

The Manchester United star wants to build the 8,000 sq ft (743 sq m) four-bedroom single-storey home into a hillside in Bradshaw, Bolton.

The application to Bolton Council includes plans for a wind turbine, solar panels and ground source heating.

Make Architects say it would be the first zero carbon house in North West England, if permission is granted. ..............

Neville certainly isn't a zero carbon man. David James is the only footballer who I have ever heard say anything eco.

Well everyone can change and the more people that get in on the act the better. It takes all sorts.   According to the Sunday Times  a brothel in Germany is giving a discount for  customers  who arrive by bicycle.

Whose definition of "zero carbon", I wonder? It looks to me like it's more eco-bling than eco-friendly. I'd like to know the specific heat demand (and also how many people will live in the 743 m2)

Making a fancy building and then planting lots of sacks of money next to it (turbine, panels etc) doesn't make it zero carbon in my book.

I'd like to be wrong. I hope they publish figures showing that it meets at least the passivhaus standard (and gets a certificate when it's built).

Very sad I know but I remember reading this article in 2004 where Martin Keown was having a heat pump installed. Anyone know of a another UK footballer doing anything vaguely "eco" before, or since? I wonder what Wayne and Coleen have got  Huh

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/3326321/Heat-pumps-come-in-from-the-cold.html

This taken from one of the links (it is 5yrs ago) made me laugh :

Solar water heating, however, which uses the sun's rays to warm the domestic hot water supply, might be worth a try. Several readers have asked for my views on solar water heating, and I have tried to investigate the possibilities. But solar water heating in the UK is still something of a cottage industry, and most of the practitioners I have spoken to seem to be evangelical to the point of eccentricity, not to say downright barmy. Maybe they've been spending too long out in the sun.

David James in quest to save the planet

If you are heading off this afternoon to a first-round FA Cup tie, David James would like you to mind how you go. Or at least take the most environmentally friendly method of getting there. Even if you are just going to watch a game on television, he would prefer it if you went round to a friend's or down the pub. And whatever you do, turn the telly off at the mains as you leave.

So there is one...
