I've been reading this post with interest,

a couple of years ago I bought, what was at the time the most efficient chest freezer on the market, a Miele GT316e and to be honest was over the moon with it as we're 'off grid' and every Kwh counts.

So pleased with it was I that I recommended it to another 'off gridder' who purchased the smaller model which died after 24 hours use between Christmas and Hogmanay ( probably as a result of low ambient temp as it was kept in an out building ).

The engineer finally came to it last week but unfortunately the compressor was toast (or words to that effect) upon explaining to my mate what I'd read here he phoned up Miele.

I'm not sure of the exact words but basically they told him to turn up the heating to make the freezer efficient Roll Eyes

Cheers, Paul

Wow! You'd have hoped that the layout of the cooling pipes were such that, should any of the gas condense in the pipes, it runs back towards the nozzle and not into the compressor?
For new fridges they always advise that you mustn't switch them on before they had a days rest. I guess that is to allow any liquid in the pipes (that might have gotten there when the unit was tipped onto it's side or so) to drain away and therefore not enter the compressor.

my dining room where my new A rated chest freezer is located has been almost constantly below 10C the last few months, perhaps that's why it's using more juice that it should be.

Perhaps not freezers but are there any absorption type (ammonia) fridges still made? They have the advantage of no turn on surge and probable easy conversion to 48v.

Seriously GB  do you really use a room at 10c ? I mean sit in it and watch tv? How long for? I can manage 16c (prefer 18-20c).
Do you not find it unpleasent?

It's the dining room/kitchen

we don't sit around in the dining room and i'm busy cooking when in the kitchen.
I couldn't sit and watch tv at that temperature
We use the lounge and keep the door shut with a little gas fire on.
