Going back to the 405 line TVs, I recall a story told to me by a colleague, about the time when he worked as a repair technician (engineer in those days).  After he had repaired the TV, he would use a bit of psychology in order to give the customer some feeling of 'input'. 

The old sets had a knob labelled 'vertical hold'.  So when he had finished, he would call the customer and he said to him/her that they had a choice of picture - at which moment he used the control to roll the picture one way and then back.  He then asked which of the pictures they preferred.  They never twigged and kicked him out....
