California’s New Solar Homes

The US state of California is famous for many things. Its national parks, landmarks like Hollywood and the Golden Gate bridge, its exciting cities and occasional earthquakes are just a few of the things California is synonymous with.

Now you can add harnessing renewable energy to that list.

California’s Energy Commission has adopted a series of standards that require the use of renewable energy to be a major part of any new houses built in the state.

Taking effect on 1 January 2020, the aim of the standards’ introduction is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions substantially. The state’s energy commission has outlined its vision of reducing these emissions so significantly that it would be the equivalent of taking 115,000 fossil fuel cars off California’s roads.

These standards focus on the below areas:

-          Smart residential solar photovoltaic systems

-          Updated thermal envelope standards that help to prevent heat transfer between a house’s interior and exterior and vice versa

-          Residential and non-residential ventilation requirements

-          Non-residential lighting requirements

As well as the energy-related steps that are being introduced, the ventilation requirements will help to bring about improved indoor air quality for Californians and protect them from air pollution.

California’s Energy Commission’s lead on energy efficiency Andrew McAllister says that the new standards will allow buildings to perform better than ever, as well as contributing to a reliable grid.

“The buildings that Californians buy and live in will operate very efficiently while generating their own clean energy,” he said. “They will cost less to operate, have healthy indoor air and provide a platform for ‘smart’ technologies that will propel the state even further down the road to a low emissions future.”

The move is the first of its kind in the US, with California the first state to make such a requirement standard.

Follow the Leader

Such a decision truly brings the use of solar thermal energy into the mainstream in a new way, and is something we at Navitron are naturally delighted to see.

We hope that other US states, and indeed other governments around the world, take note of California’s progressive, pioneering approach to renewable energy usage.

It’s this kind of thinking that will help to protect the planet for future generations, and we would encourage anybody in a position to make a similar type of decision follow suit.

Of course, adding solar panels and renewable energy technology doesn’t have to ‘come from above’. There are plenty of ways you can embrace solar energy, helping you to reduce electricity bills, heat your water and live a greener life.

There are also plenty of opportunities out there for businesses to make the move to renewable energy too.

So if you’re keen to do as the Californians are doing and make the leap to renewable energy, our team of experts at Navitron can help. Get in touch with us today.
