Will the UK hit its 2020 energy targets?

Governments around the world have become more environmentally conscious since the turn of the millennium – and the UK is no different.

In response to growing social and cultural awareness around the topic of renewable energy, the UK government set itself a series of targets and goals with the aim of securing a more sustainable, green future.

The government signed up to a series of legal obligations around renewable energy, but there was undoubtedly a lot of work required.

In 2004, just 1.1% of the UK’s energy came from renewable sources. The government’s aim by 2020 is for that figure to be at 15%.

The breakdown of these aims includes 30% of the UK’s electricity, 12% of its heat and 10% of its transport being powered by renewable energy by 2020.

With less than a year to go until 2020, how close is the UK to achieving that overall 15% target?

According to statistics released earlier this year by Alphr and Statistica, the UK’s share of energy from renewable sources stood at 9.3%.

That means there’s still a hell of a lot of work to be done if that 15% target is going to be reached or even got close to.

What can be done?

To turn this vision into a reality, the UK renewables policy framework has targeted three key enablers:

-          Offering financial support for renewable energy usage

-          Removing the barriers that prevent the delivery of renewable energy

-          Supporting the development of emerging technologies

As part of this mission, the government has put together a Clean Growth strategy that was revealed last year.

This strategy covers a wide array of areas, and you can play your part in helping the UK become a greener, more sustainable nation.

Enabling Clean Growth

Specific aims included within the government’s clean growth strategy included:

-          Investing in clean growth

-          Making businesses and industry more energy efficient

-          Making homes more energy efficient

-          Introducing low-carbon heating

-          Deliver ‘clean, smart, flexible’ power

This shows the scope of the energy plans that are in place, and highlights how everybody can contribute.

But it shouldn’t simply be a case of wanting to help the UK achieve these targets – it’s more about protecting our planet for future generations and using renewable energy sources to make this happen.

Start to contribute today

Whether the 2020 target will be hit depends on the success in these aforementioned areas. Whether they come to fruition remains to be seen.

Regardless, every effort from homeowners and businesses to operate and live in a more sustainable way makes a difference. The more of us who make the jump to sustainable energy, the better the future of our planet will be.
