Title: Tesla 18650 Cells on eBay
Post by: dan_b on August 18, 2017, 01:11:16 PM
Chap on eBay selling a stock of over 3000 Tesla 18650 cells.
Might be of interest to someone looking to do a homebrew battery bank?

"twice the energy density of nissan leaf cells!"  Can that really be true ?  Nissan would not be that far behind the curve.

According to this comparison table I found on the internet, yes.

And don't forget the new Tesla 2170 cell is apparently 30% more energy dense than the 18650.

Blimey also (if true).  So i wonder what the i3 and Ioniq are.  Having the better "power to weight ratio" you can see why Tesla are marketing the range and performance angle, somewhere the opposition cannot offer.

From memory, Nissan use large format pouch cells which are easier to package into modules. Tesla have clearly perfected and highly automated the process of connecting 6-7000 cells to create their battery pack. They seem to know their onions.

Slightly off topic but for the giant Australian storage farm they are building, Tesla are using Samsung batts as they need all of 'their' batts at the moment.

Also a question of shipping logistics - the Samsung cells have less distance to travel so can get to the site more quickly- Tesla as on the clock to build that facility in 100days...

Correct, the Renault/Nissan battery packs are pouches.
And yes, correct, Tesla has highly automated the process of assembling those battery packs from their cells, and its the same battery pack design that is used in the PowerWall and PowerPack units - they just churn them out by the thousand...
