Title: Smappee , has anyone got one or seen them in action?
Post by: Paul_m on September 16, 2018, 08:23:56 PM
So whilst sat on my hols looking at more solar and getting into trouble for it,   I came across the sense home monitor.
Although it's a US piece of kit I liked the look of it to really calculate usage by individual items to size accurately.
Finding a uk version took an little time.
Thoughts and feedback,  I ran a search and nothing came up.

Good post! Price hit me first as a bit high. You can buy a inline plug that will monitor and record consumption on a single unit for about 15. Amazon sell smart app controlled switches for 12 or so. Will look more at the product though and see what else it offers, cheers.

Do navitron do something like smappee?I like the idea because it learns all of your appliances by signature and then you edit the name to see what it's using.
The single ones are OK but you need to move it around the house to individual items.

Can you get a device to measure the power consumption per day through a USB socket  ?

That smappee thing costs more than my annual electricity bill  :o
I think this is directed more towards the wealthier gadget-freak .

From what I can see from an hour or so of research (so not a great deal!), the wifi smart plugs that advertise energy consumption features do not provide (out of the box) the ability to see consumption as a graph over time.

I found some code on github that polls the tplink kasa plug every 60 seconds, but that then assumes that you have a computer running the whole time to run the code to do the polling.  Quite the energy overhead.

However, there are two other less energy intensive options available.

If you have a compatible router, you could refresh the firmware to run dd-wrt or similar which, as a linux based release, enables you to add the kasa polling code to your router (I think!) - with the addition of a thumb drive to the router means you can use the software running on the router with negligible extra energy consumption.

The other is that you could run the software on a headless raspberry pi or similar.  Even if you don't already have one running a media server or the like, these minimalist boxes consume an order of magnitude (or two) less energy than the big box PCs.

Regarding Sense, it needs a spare slot in your MCU, drat!
