I have a SI5048 which is grounded to a earth rod. I need to make a connection between N and PE conductors on the AC side of the inverter. The manual says this should be performed externally to the inverter. The inverter feeds a double pole circuit breaker which in turn supplies the house. Am I right in thinking this connection of N and PE takes place between the inverter and the DP switch?

The earth connection to create a TN system goes between the "N" output of your inverter and the earth connection... assuming your inverter is designed to have one output pole earthed, which you say your manual says is appropriate. If the inverter outputs have no reference to earth, it doesn't matter which pole you earth to create a TN system, but be advised by the inverter manufacturer's information.

You can check using a test lamp - buy one from your local Electrical Factor.

Make sure the test lamp works by connecting across a known source of 230v, AC or DC. It should, of course, light up. Then connect the test lamp to each output pole of your inverter to earth - your earth rod and the inverter's case/earth connection. The test lamp should show no light at all.

The reason you use a test lamp, not a multimeter, is that a multimeter can read NOTHING if set to DC, and AC volts are present - and vice-versa. A test lamp doesn't care; ANY voltage will give light, so is unambiguous.

You will, of course, have your installation fully tested and certified by a competent professional Electrical Engineer before you energise it, won't you? Without up-to-date Test Certificates, your house & fire insurance is probably invalid...
