Nice Andy,

Now I know very little about listers, but where is the starter motor?

I think the starter motor is low down on same side as exhaust and air inlet manifolds.  Must be one or it would make the "start-o-matic" a bit difficult to pass off, even to the Ministry.

C/M,
I think the starter is motor is in the actual dc windings of the alternator,24volt winding,I believe it starts up automatically when you switch on a light inside the house, or the voltage on the batts drops. These were incredibly reliable affiars. But Paul is your man, or Paul and Cyril,

Biff,  now you mention it I believe your right.  I havn't had owt to do with a startomatic since I was in the Shetlands back in the 1970's.

Cheers.

Hmmmm,

this is not a 'Start O Matic' by any stretch of the imagination and this set cannot even be started remotely. Biff is quite correct in that the DC windings are used to spin it over but on this model the decompression levers must be operated manually. This means that you have to stand over it and use two hands to start it. It can be converted, indeed I've done it, but, whilst there is a place for a starter motor there is no ring gear on the flywheel  Cry Cyril was like this when I bought him but I had all the solenoids to convert him and got a ring gear FOC so only had to buy a starter motor for him, even so it was a couple of hundred quid. The required starter turns ACW and is rare as rocking horse pooh. To convert it to a genuine 'Start O Matic' requires a control box, AC solenoid for the decompresser and DC solenoid for the fuel rack, it is a lot of work.

Still a damned good genny though  Wink
