Driving to France this morning and spotted this bunch of cables at the Tunnel. Looks like Eleclink, but looks like there’s still a lot of cable reeled up. Guess they’ve not done the cable pull yet then...

Look again at your pictures Dan. You can see that the two drums of the black cable are in fact having cabling pulled off the drum. However the rear frame supports do not appear to have rollers fitted on them. The poor cables are going to get a bit scuffed on the way.

This of interest? Seems logical (but I don't know much about it).

Thanks - that's interesting.  My occasional trawls on news on HVDCs hadn't even dragged up Project Nautilus or Project EuroLink

http://sases.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/NGV-Nautilus-Eurolink-Proposals-14-12-2018.pdf
Nautilus is/was a 1.4GW interconnector from Suffolk to Belgium. Looks like the idea was to have it connected by 2028.

With EuroLink being a similar 1.4GW interconnector from Suffolk to the Netherlands, built on a similar timescale.

Makes me wonder - why are both going to the same grid connection in Suffolk? Is there a nuclear power plant on the grid there that will be decommissioned around that time?

Since that is just beside Sizewell, will Sizewell C be built or is this a way to use some of the exiting infrastructure that exists since Sizewell A was decomissioned? Or are we looking at using the infrastructure for Sizewell C assuming B decomissions in 2035 (although maybe extended)?

Aah there you go - yes I imagine this is to feed into the existing grid infrastructure that exists around Sizewell A?

SZA grid connection was used by Great Gabbard windfarm. Saw the contractors working there last time I was on site.
US experiance will be to extend PWR lifetimes. They are now looking at 60 to 80 years. So long as neutron embrittlement of the pressure vessel and corrosion is controlled, a long life could be attained.
Two L6 routes to Sizewell site exist . If C station gets built, which is on the cards, then more transmission capacity will be required,

Hot news!
IFA2 connection is now being tested in its commissioning phase - they were scheduled to complete by end of Q3 and they claim on their website that despite COVID they are on schedule. I think a couple fo weeks slippage given what's happened is probably close enough?!

Might need some more Interconnectors installed Today.

National Grid has warned that Britain’s electricity will be in short supply over the next few days after a string of unplanned power plant outages and unusually low wind speeds this week.

IFA1 currentlly exporting to France about 240MW. Importing 1GW from Holland nothing to/from Belgium and full export to Ireland on both links .
Gas about 20 GW.
We are not at winter max load yet on either gas and electricity. So not a good place to be. Too many people in government and National grid talking up the demise of coal, yet here we are on the brink of a shortful with capacity restrictions in France too.
Have a read about the bridges in London too, same story really ( eye off the ball for too long).

Just seen this news article about ElecLink - the 1GW HVDC being routed via the Channel Tunnel - north running line.

It's saying commissioning is now expected in mid-2022.
