Hi Andy, no problem with piccies.

The trick with the metposts is to keep the in line.I use the 600mm long spike variety. Put in a couple of wooden posts and a string line outside the actuall site boundaries then line up the post positions along the tight string. I cut a short length of post say 450mm and put that in the metpost and some what tighten the clamp bolt to keep it rigid,.  Then I carefully drive in the post using a fencing mall to get a good even thump on the end of the wooden insert.  Go slow and steady to start and keep checking with a bubble for verticallity!


I used 150 X 32 treated decking board.  I've used for agricultural joinery for years and found it to be far better than ordinary treated softwood.  The grain is dense and if you select the boards are generally fairly knot free.  The preservative treatment is long lived but do recoat any cut ends.  As the structure is in the air steam I've had no trouble with rotting so far.

For reference we are up on the 300mtr contour line and on occasions do have real wind.  The metposts are far cheaper and more benign than more concrete.

I find that with metposts its important to NOT knock them in the ground too far.

In this way the wood stays a little off the ground and does not sit in sodden ground where they rot in about 3 years even if they are tantalised.

With several of mine rotted in 3 years, I dug out a few inches of soil and replaced with 20mm gravel around the metposts which aided to the drainage. The replaced wooded posts have been in 5 more years without a hint of rotting.

Agreed nowty,  that's why I use the 600mm spikes and leave 50mm or so above ground.

Thanks for all your advice.  I shall try and come up with a design which is tolerant of variable spacing on the metposts.  We do have the odd large rock in the ground which can rot up post installs.  We are a similar height to yourself Andy so it's good to know it has stood strong.

I helped a friend with 2 ground mount arrays recently, they're made with "BlueBand" type piping.
I came up with a pretty simple way to use short pieces of uni strut to attach the panels to the pipe work.
This allowed the horizontal rails to be made with the same pipe as the A frames which is ideal for the long spans between the uprights.
Very happy all in all and it should be very strong. The legs of the A frames were secured in trenches with some concrete left over from a construction job on the site.

2 x 2.5kW arrays were installed at 60 and 50 degrees respectively to help with winter production.

I love what you have done there.  I shall look to do something similar when mine have rotted away.  I didn't have much time so just bashed some fence posts I had into the ground and bolted some rails on.  I'm not expecting it to last that long.

What size piping did you use? 1 inch or more.

I believe it's the 44mm version, the connectors were purchased from DC Iron in the UK.
I've since picked up a large quantity of the 27mm version second hand and will be using that to make some frames for 2 other friends.
They won't be installing theirs so steeply and can just use more uprights to reduce the spans.
The panels shown in the photos are very large, 2m x 1.3m ones.
