Heyas,

I'm in the process of designing an E-disconnect system for my power plant.
Does anyone know...do I have to isolate the mains input as well as the ELV input of an inverter combi or can I just isolate the 48VDC feeders?

How do combis behave with mains present at the mains input and no battery connected?

All the instructions I have ever read for different models say connect battery first then mains.

Yurp.
Any idea why?

You can run many a battery charger or transfer relay without batteries.
Most of them also have LVD but I suspect that's load disconnect not control.

What happens if your main battery fuse pops?
