Well, following the link from JohnS led me a merry extended breakfast-time dance for a while ( much muttering from the present Mrs Chas re o/s gardening chores, fineness of the weather etc ) through various Google and eBay searches to a possible conclusion: as hammers with convex and flat faces are commonly planishing hammers, used in 'flatwork', it could be a heavyweight one of those, maybe from the car industry. Sometimes one end is square, no doubt making it easier to select the right profile, provided you can remember which is which.
Maybe I'll put a bit of insulation tape - red for danger - around the 'damn-me-I've-done-it-again' unloved rounded end.
