Blackberries have been ready for picking for the last week. It is a very good year for them. Here are the 2 litres, 700 fruits, 2.5lbs which I picked this evening rather than watch the news. This was to the  accompaniment of calling by skeins of geese flying from Carsington Water back to their local ponds. They become noticeable in early August and the numbers build up through the month.....a sign of Autumn.

Wow they look good my mouth is watering just looking at them, blackberry and apple crumble is almost as good as it gets, apart from cowpie of course Grin

I love blackberries in any form. Shame we can't eat acorns, there's a bumper crop round my way. (acorn jam? pate? soup? )

Yet to see a blackberry in Sweden. Could the Viking invasions be explained be explained by desire for crumble. First geese flying south a couple of weeks back. There is a distinct coolness first thing. Very envious Stan.

No sign of any here in the 'frozen north' :-( but apart from a brilliant April and May the rest of the year has been pretty carp. When they do ripen too, they'll no be anything like the size of those either. As for acorns either get some pigs or make them into acorn coffee http://foragedfoods.co.uk/how-to-make-acorn-coffee/ apparently it was drunk a lot during the war.

No blackberries here yet,
                         But it looks promising. No geese as yet either. This is their route as well and large skeins honk their way over our roof top every year. The five mountain ash on our front lawn are once again bending under the weight of their fruit which varies in color from orange to vivid red. They are a happy lot with good friends at their feet. They are all different. Different colored bark, different method of growing, Some send up multi saplings with no main trunk, some just grow like an ordinary tree but most send out shoots from the roots that grow parallel in time. Some years ago , Mrs Biff pleated 4 parallels together, They were quite tall and willowly and bent and contorted in the wind, The pleat left them strong and able to withstand the wind but as the years went by, we can see the pain that such restriction placed on them, the gnarled and knotted efforts speak volumes and maybe it says a lot about interfering with nature.
  Our apple crop is jumping ahead and one of my jobs today is to pick a box of Bramleys and deliver them 200yds down the road to an English neignbour who is recovering from a serious illness. Our plums are  looking good and will be ready by mid September. But Blackberries, ? Nope, loads of promise but nothing yet.
  The sun is out and our W/T is milling away in the west wind, The hounds are snoozing in the hall, full of breakfast. I will venture forth with my brown cardboard box.

We took the dogs for a walk at the weekend to Criccieth in North wales, Ivory our lab retriever cross has just had ten pups and was in need of some respite from the constant feeding.  While walking along the cliff top we passed a lady with a bread bag (700g loaf size I am guessing) almost full to the brim!

That prompted me to whip out one of the dogs poop bags (unused of course ) and we too commenced to fill the bag with huge fruits. 

Since been converted in to the humble and oh so delicious blackberry and apple crumble

I thought I'd try blackberry vodka this year having had some success with sloe gin a couple of years ago (couldn't find any sloes last year).

I did some blackberry vodka last year at the same time as some sloe gin, I think the vodka would have benefitted from more blackberries though as it was nicely coloured but low on flavour - I had just pushed half a pound of fruit in to a litre of vodka (1.5 l bottle that was started I think? hic)

Will try again this year but instead of using the blackberries in their natural form I was wondering if I could render them down first to form a concentrate blackberry cordial that could be added to the vodka? Anyone have any similar experience.

That's less than half the fruit in the recipes I've seen.  I'll be aiming for 375g per 700ml (-ish, I don't have a set of kitchen scales).

Plenty of fruit. The secret of success
Worked with raspberries, blackcurrant, and blackberry.  Too sweet for my taste but Mrs T loves to experiment.
Be careful about crushing the fruit can lead to cloudy booze.
I tried it with blackberry thinking that filter it with a coffee filter, the taste was fine but it was cloudy.

When we were in France and booze at about 7 a bottle you could afford to experiment (responsibly). Our French friends loved to try any experiments with alcohol. surrender

Just had a very nice walk through Richmond Park this afternoon, from Kingston to Richmond Gate, scrumping blackberries along the way. Definitely got my 5 a day today!
