I keep hoping the price of the marine lithium batteries will start to drop. At the moment, to purchase a 45 KWH marine bank is around £45,000 plus specialist charger and other safeguards. A 40 KWH pack for the Zoe is around £5000..Huge difference! I wonder if it's not worth dismantling the Zoe pack and rebuliding it in a marine box, with zoe charger!

Off grid; 4KWH install charging Rolls 24v 1000 A.H. batteries with 3 Tristar controllers. 3KW Victron Inverter with FIT meter on output. Relay driver automatically opens circuits as battery charges. 6 x 15 experimental solar collectors feeding 250 L. tank. Angus wood gasification boiler.

This is the way to go. I've picked up 16kWh of lightly used EV lithiums for well under £2k recently

What exactly is a 'marine' battery ? I have always wondered, it's a term that gets used a lot but as far as I can tell means nothing other than the excuse to charge people more money.

Correct!! Anything marine usually attaches a hefty premium! However, when it comes down to it, whether it's electronics or just about anything else, it is subject to salt air and water, massively corrosive. One cannot afford to have breakdowns at sea either, so kit has to be ofthe highest quality. As an example, Victron use all "new" components in their equipment and as such, we very rarely let down by their chargers and inverters, normally just needing a clean of the cooling fan. On Eleonora (45 M classic sailing yacht), we have two 35 kwh generators and 40 a kwh battery bank with three multi plus's managing the single phase side of the power requirements. The 24v battery bank is used to power the deck winches for hoisting and trimming sails, etc. There is sufficient power to run the vessel "dead ship", ie without generators over night, as long as there is no A/C or cooking! Being a commercial vessel (we charter) means conforming to maritime rules and regulations, which means the batteries and installation would have to be approved by their surveyor. For non commercial yachts, then there is nothing to stop anyone doing what they want, but at the back of your mind is failure of systems at sea and worse, fire.
Down here, on shore and off grid, it makes complete sense to start using recycled vehicle batteries, and I can't wait to double my capacity ( 150 ampere hours of Rolls at the moment).

''Tis just a marketing ploy to fleece yachtsmen M. As most of us know on here, there are two types of battery. Ones that have oomph and deliver lots of CCA (SLI) and ones that do not but can deliver smaller currents for longer periods i.e. Deep Cycle. The so called "marine" is supposed to both but in reality does neither as good as a dedicated SLI or Deep Cycle. Any mariner worth his salt would always have a dedicated starter bank anyway so a battery that can allegedly do both your hotel loads and starting is pointless. Nothing but a con really. As for Lloyds approval, yes there is a list but I doubt that the majority of ones advertised as marine are on it, certainly not a Nissan pack for sure. What exactly is a 'marine' battery ? .... I guess we need to know the life cycles that a ev car can deliver , as far as I know ( hope it improved ) they have do not do an impressive number of deep cycles .... and that cycle number compariment between batteries is essential in my eyes Billi

Despite working on a ferry powered by a .6mWh LiFePO4 battery bank, deep cycle FLA's would be my choice for a displacement craft. Keep em low down and the extra weight is a great advantage.

We have them down low, under the floors (as you say, good for ballast). Unfortunately, someone left a valve open in the machine room and the alarm was off.......agm batteries do not like salt water!
