Looks like MCS is finally drawing up a Battery Storage Standard........   Amazing how the cancellation of one incentive can incentivise one. whistlie

MCS has had a strong role in the market place as all the government incentives (such as FiTs) has required MCS approved parts installed by an MCS installer, following an MCS defined process. The incentives made up for the additional costs incurred by having such a formal process.

I'm not sure how well the same approach is going to work out for battery storage systems if there are no supporting incentives. Reading their draft document they will not be certifying devices, so much of their 'value add' is the repeating of things like the 'Renewable Energy Consumer Code' and British Standards for electrical work and Ingress Protection.

I get the feeling that a number of consumers will find it cost-effective to get a quote from an MCS approved installer and then just have an unapproved installer do the work.

Many MCS installers were "unapproved" in the day as it was only a requirement for one person to be certified in a company and only they were responsible for signing of all work which was completed using sub contractors who were not actually MCS trained. Hence there were/still are many very poor installations in the UK. Many decent small businesses with the MCS standard were unable to compete as the cost of maintaining MCS standards (including all the back office operations) were too much for for their budgets.
