my guess at pictogram is
if calculating 'old school' method ie left to right then 48 but using BIDMAS then it works out to be 43

Strictly speaking, it depends whether a left boot has the same value as a right boot (and ditto a left and right cone).

if one shoe is half two shoes and one cone is half two cones then 10 + 5 * 4 = 30 reverse polish notation (Sinclair scientific )

The boy in the bottom line has shoes on (10) and two cones in his hand (4) so the sum is 5 + (5+4+10) x 2 So depending on how you associate the operators your get either (19x2)+5 = 43 or 24 x 2 = 48 But you already knew that

The answer that I was given was 48 Totally agree about the eye test! Mrs T's local WhatsApp group was pinging this round half the evening while I was trying to watch the repeat of Wallander. Take care Tod

(2x5) + (2x5) + (2x5) = 30 5 + 5 + (2x5) = 20 (2x2) + (2x2) + 5 = 13 5 + ((5 + (2x2) + (2x5)) x 2) = ? 5 + (5 + 4 + 10) x 2) = ? 5 + (19x2) = ? 5 + 38 = 43 But what is supposed to be in the newspaper cones? (Edit - this was the best reference I could find to BODMAS for anyone interested - http://jeff560.tripod.com/operation.html )

It's only now I'm in the office on the 24" screen that I see the bottom boy has trainers not shoes So in theory I tend towards the 43. BUT do the black shoes have a 'value' to be subtracted before adding back the trainers? I'm so paranoid now, I'm even counting the laces in the trainers and number of stripes on the shirt The contents of the cones looks a lot like environmentally unfriendly coal to me Nice one Tod. Mrs T wrote about the BODMAS suggestions to her friends and that opened a (very friendly) can of worms husbands, mathematical children and those with good eyesight were roped in to offer an opinion. The consensus is that 43 is the correct answer. Thank you all for answering and for your humour. I did get to see the end of Wallander.

Antman The black things on his feet are socks, so are worn under his trainers. Nothing to deduct. This whole graphical math quiz appears to have its origins in Russia (there are loads more like this one), so just watch out.
