Seems like the idea didn't poll well in focus groups so Cummings has pulled it?

The last car scrappage was a con. Perfectly good cars being scrapped so the better off could upgrade their cars.

If people want a car then dig into your pocket and pay for it yourself , not from the taxpayer.

People should be encouraged to keep cars not scrap them so they can buy more embedded energy every other year. Each model gets bigger, takes up more room on the roads, won't fit in the garage, can't be fixed and doesn't have a feckin spare wheel, how is that 'progress'  Roll Eyes

I think the hope was that this mooted scrappage scheme would have incentivised replacement of ICE with BEV.
But otherwise I agree it's a blunt tool.

I think incentives keep prices high. 6k off (or what ever it was going to be) but no other discount. Every ICE advert you see give some discount or ultra low (subsidised / baked into the mix) finance deal. I'm sure the same goes for the 3.5k discount at the moment. There seems to be too much demand for EV's and not enough supply. Price isn't the issue at the moment. Not to long ago there were 12 month waiting lists for the Niro etc. I'd say scrap the discount and increase the initial (1st years) tax on ICE and use that income to fund EV infrastructure and sway people away from ICE.

Same goes for home EVSE. I had x2 on the grant scheme and had to pay full price for the third installation. I was told by installer that cost for grant installed was higher due to the form filling to get the grant.

There needs to be more stick to discourage ICE and less carrot to encourage EV's so they are easily comparable to one another. A situation such as "they cost the same amount to buy but the EV will be slightly less convenient on a long trip but cost buttons to run" will make people think about it more than a big discount but still more expensive than ICE and any savings will be over the next 5 years. Levelling the playing field with higher ICE tax to reflect some of the pollution damage rather than incentive for less damage will allow the free market to dictate the true EV price / value.

The French had an incentive scheme for the installation of PV, result was price was bumped artificially high so the 'incentive' could be given. It was 30% cheaper to buy from Germany with no government incentive!

A good boost to encourage the well off to change their cars but would do little to encourage general take up.
I think Paul has it about right.

Why would the gov want to do this ? Why not let capatalist forces get us there.

Just smells of politics to me.  Perhaps trying to get Tesla to build in the UK or Nissam to keep producing in UK.  Or do they just want to be loved and get our vote.   Nope, i guess it must be post Brexit then.  One things for sure it is not about EVs v ICE

Coz after 40 years of trying it's pretty obvious that they don't work too well for lots of stuff, can't spell either Grin
