I've recently noticed that the meter on my first PV system (installed Jan 2010 and the one I get FIT on) loses its display when the generation is zero or not much higher i.e. when the red light is on.

It definitely didn't use to do that but still seems to be recording generation OK (I take weekly readings and they are about par for the course right now).

I'm guessing it's on its way out?  I've seen some other posts on here regarding this particular meter but none with this specific failure mode.

I know they are obsolete and I have different meters on my other two systems.

I'm still with Eon - I guess I just take a phot of the reading before I swap out for the new and send it to them?

I had my generation meter fail completely a few years ago and I had no metering for my  6kw wind turbine for a while until I replaced it. They are relatively cheap as the previous post and easy to replace. I just notified my FIT company which is SSE that I had changed the meter and the new serial nos with a start reading and they were happy with that. You should be Ok as yours is still reading so you shouldn't lose any FIT if you change it. I did open my old one up to see what was wrong as I thought there might be a battery to keep the display working  and the red light on  for a time when there is no energy flow but there was no obvious sign of a battery only a rather burnt PCB!

Did you swap your meter for a new one? If so did you have any hassle with EON over FITs etc.

Asking because the 9 1/2 year old Elster A100C TGM on one of my systems has "stuck". Same reading for last 3 days even though the inverter has shown several units of generation. Checked the connections, even though they must be OK otherwise the inverter wouldn't show anything, nothing amiss.

Thanks

Yes, replaced with the one listyed above.  Informed Eon and they insisted on photos of old and new - luckily I'd taken a photo during the day when there was generation and hence the display was visible.

I have a FIT reading due in the next week; I'm entirely expecting the online reading input to fail because the new value will be less than the old one and then I'll have to contact Eon support again.

I'll update here as to how it went.

Fairly certain the Elster does not have a battery. I have 3 of them on 3 different systems, one is 15 years old, one nearly 11 and this one which is "only" 9 1/2. It is still displaying digits and the RED light is permanently on should "flash" 1000 times per kWh. It is just that the digits don't change. i.e. it is not counting kWh as it should. The inverter is indicating that there is generation - not much as it is overcast and raining - but there is some!

When mine died - literally burnt out on the teminals - nPower insisted I have a letter from a certified electrician. Which was fine, as the replacement was done by the same guy as did the original install 10 years ago.

I'll update here as to how it went.

We'll I logged in yesterday and went to the meter reading page and the previous reading had correctly been reset to zero so had no issues with entering the new value.

Logged in again just now and I'll be getting 228 to my account in the next few days - that correctly matches the generation/deemed export up to the meter replacement combined with the generation etc. since the new one was installed.

Can't really fault Eon's FiT service other than their propensity to ask for photos of my meter about every two years as the meter reader never writes down the serial # correctly.  The new meter has a much longer serial # so that is likely to continue ... Sad

Update. Similar experience to greeentangerine. Got a replacement Emilite ECA2 meter - 30 + P&P. Fitted it - exactly same size and fixings as the old Elster A100C meter so literally a straight swap. Took some pictures, emailed Scottish Power with the details. 24 hours later email reply saying all details had been updated. Will wait until next quarters reading and payment, but I don't think there will be any issue. Efficient service from Scottish Power.
