There's no material harvested or manufactured by humans that doesn't in some way pollute the environment or exploit a people in its collection. I'd prefer for the press to put forward the cutting edge alternative that they know of rather than 'raising awareness'.
It comes down to 'pay your money, take your chance'. I don't lose any sleep over it.
A physicist acquaintance of mine informed me that the Afghan war (latest a few years ago) was primarily to ensure control of the Lithium in the country. Another pal who served there wasn't too happy with that as he was up until that moment certain he'd been there for freedom. liberation and the destruction of the Taliban.
